Bộ chuyển đổi nối tiếp RS-232/485/422 sang Ethernet (hoặc Serial Device Server) là một thiết bị mạng truyền dữ liệu giữa mạng cục bộ Ethernet và thiết bị nối tiếp (cổng COM). Mục đích chính của Bộ chuyển đổi nối tiếp RS-232/485/422 sang Ethernet là kết nối các thiết bị nối tiếp vào chung hệ thống mạng LAN Ethernet của máy tính. Điều này cho phép bất kỳ thiết bị nối tiếp nào được kết nối với mạng và được truy cập từ mọi nơi, kể cả từ Internet.
Bộ chuyển đổi nối tiếp sang Ethernet hoạt động thông qua việc tạo ra các cổng COM ảo (có phần cứng kết nối cổng nối tiếp thực tế, chỉ có giao diện là ảo) bắt chước cổng của PC, đánh lừa thiết bị nghĩ rằng nó được kết nối với một cổng. Máy chủ nối tiếp thực hiện việc gán địa chỉ IP và các cổng TCP cần thiết cho cổng COM ảo để thiết bị và người dùng có thể giao tiếp với thiết bị nối tiếp được gắn vào máy chủ, cũng như định tuyến lưu lượng truy cập đến thiết bị nối tiếp chính xác.
